the base64 command is my favorite Linux command I use the base64 command to encode or decode from base64 encoding if I pipe this hello world statement into the base64 command Iamp;#39;ll see the following string of base64 characters I can also decode the same base64 encoded string by using the dash d-flag the base64 character set is defined in request for comment 4648 in this table you can see that the base64 encoding uses all uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet as well as the digits 0 to 9 and the plus and forward slash characters additionally an equal sign character is used for padding the base64 command is useful for reliably encoding non-printable binary characters into a form that canamp;#39;t be easily corrupted by other programs base64 is more efficient at representing information than base 32 however its larger character set means that there are more ways for base64 encoded data to become corrupted in transit

Base64 is not an encryption algorithm and in no case should it be used to hash passwords or encrypt sensitive data, because it is a reversible algorithm and the encoded data can be easily decoded. Base64 may only be used to encode raw result of a cryptographic function.
Then at some point you have to decode this pseudo-text back into an original data because base64 gibberish in itself is useless. Decoding performs similar binary operations but in reverse. The restored data is guaranteed to be exactly the same as before encoding.
Base64 is not encryption. But yes, different input strings will always encode to different Base64-encoded strings, and the same input string will always encode to the same Base64-encoded string. Its not a hash though, so small changes in the input will only result in small changes in the output.
Unfortunately its not completely safe. There are only 62 characters that are guaranteed to have no special meaning in all systems. They are digits, English small letters, and English capital letters. You need 2 more characters for base64.
What is Radix 64 Encoding? Radix 64 encoding allows binary data stored in octets (i.e. bytes) to be expressed as printable characters.
Reversing a Base64 encoded string involves decoding the Base64 representation back into its original binary form and then converting it to the original value or data.
Base64 only contains AZ , az , 09 , + , / and = . So the list of characters not to be used is: all possible characters minus the ones mentioned above. For special purposes . and are possible, too.
Base64 strings tend to end in one or two equal signs, but not always! These strings are not exact representations of the binary data in ASCII, because padding is applied to ensure the string length is a multiple of 4 characters. Each equal sign represents two bits of zero-padding.
