CHAP is a stronger authentication method than PAP, because the secret is not transmitted over the link, and because it provides protection against repeated attacks during the life of the link. As a result, if both PAP and CHAP authentication are enabled, CHAP authentication is always performed first.
The PAP and CHAP authentication schemes were initially designed for authenticating remote users connecting to networks or systems using PPP. CHAPs three-way handshake protocol offers enhanced security against password guessing and eavesdropping attacks compared to PAPs two-way handshake.
No mutual authentication: CHAP does not provide mutual authentication, which means that the network cannot authenticate the user in the same way that the user authenticates the network. This can leave the network vulnerable to spoofing attacks.
Dont use any word that can be found in the dictionary - even foreign words. Try to avoid using passwords with double letters or numbers. Some of the worst passwords are: password, drowssap, admin, 123456, and the name of your company or department.
PAP is simple and supported by all network operating systems. CHAP doesnt support very old operating systems. It uses cryptographic hash functions to improve security. Considering the security of authentication, CHAP is more secure than PAP.
PAP, or password authentication protocol, is a point-to-point protocol (PPP) authentication method that uses passwords to validate users. It is an internet standard (RFC 1334), password-based authentication protocol. Using PAP, data is not encrypted. It is sent to the authentication server as plain text.
PAP is more susceptible to cyberattacks than CHAP because it doesnt have the built-in safeguards that CHAP has. Specifically, CHAP doesnt transmit passwords, has an ongoing authentication mechanism, and uses an encrypted calculation to help each entity verify the identity of the other.
