We can define the border color and outline color for an element. Unlike borders, outline doesnt take up any space. The border-color property is used to set an elements border color and the outline-color property is used to set its outline color.
The outline-offset property adds space between the outline and the edge or border of an element. The space between an element and its outline is transparent. Outlines differ from borders in three ways: An outline is a line drawn around elements, outside the border edge. An outline does not take up space.
Outlines Vs Borders An outline is the same on all sides. Outlines do not have any impact on surrounding elements apart from overlapping. Unlike borders, outlines do not change the size or position of the element. Outlines may be non-rectangular, but you cannot create circular outlines.
Note: Outline differs from borders! Unlike border, the outline is drawn outside the elements border, and may overlap other content. Also, the outline is NOT a part of the elements dimensions; the elements total width and height is not affected by the width of the outline.
Outlines dont take the space meaning that using outlines or not doesnt affect the dimension of element. border supports rounded corners with the border-radius property. Meanwhile outline doesnt. We can define the border style for each side via the border-top , border-left , border-bottom and border-right properties.
As you can see, they both use the default text color as the outline-color , and they both have outline-style set to none . The only difference is the outline-width : When the outline is 0 , the outline-width is 0px. When the outline is none , the outline-width is medium.
outline only makes a line around any element to make it look different from the other elements.it will not give any space. whereas margin will give space around any element.
Padding provides space inside the container. Outline is purely decorative. Save this answer.
