ASCending and DESCending Order Direction By default things are sorted by ascending order. You can choose to reverse that order by specifying DESC, for descending.
When sorting your result set in descending order, you use the DESC attribute in your ORDER BY clause as follows: SELECT lastname, firstname, city FROM contacts WHERE lastname = Johnson ORDER BY city DESC; This MySQL ORDER BY example would return all records sorted by the city field in descending order.
You can order your records in ascending or descending order. The default is ASCENDING, which is shortened to ASC in SQL syntax. The opposite is of course DESCENDING, which is shortened to DESC .
A negative number is a number whose value is always less than zero and it has a minus (-) sign before it. On a number line, negative numbers are represented on the left side of zero. For example, -6 and -15 are negative numbers.
You can use the ASC and DESC keywords to specify ascending (smallest value first) or descending (largest value first) order. The default order is ascending. For DATE and DATETIME data types, smallest means earliest in time and largest means latest in time.
