Lookaheads and lookbehinds are types of capture groups that traverse text until a certain pattern occurs. A lookahead traverses the string from the beginning of the line. A lookbehind traverses a line from its end.
Negative lookahead matches the string which is definitely not followed by the pattern which we have defined in the regex pattern part. Lets give an example to understand the negative lookahead: Consider the sentence: I play on the playground. It is the best ground.
To use the negation operator, you place the ^ metacharacter immediately after the opening square bracket. For example, [^abc] matches any character that is not a, b, or c. Here are a few examples to illustrate how the negation operator works: [^0-9] : Matches any character that is not a digit.
Negative lookahead matches the string which is definitely not followed by the pattern which we have defined in the regex pattern part.
Negative lookahead The syntax is: X(?! Y) , it means search X , but only if not followed by Y .
Negative lookahead assertions are a feature of Perl Compatible Regular Expressions that says dont match if the following thing matches, without consuming any of the text. This is commonly used to provide an exception to a regex. For example (?! bar)b.. would match baz but not bar .
A positive lookbehind returns a match only if the character you want to match is preceded by another character you specify in your pattern. On the other hand, a negative lookbehind returns a match only if the character you want to match is not preceded by another character.
The positive lookahead construct is a pair of parentheses, with the opening parenthesis followed by a question mark and an equals sign. You can use any regular expression inside the lookahead (but not lookbehind, as explained below). Any valid regular expression can be used inside the lookahead.
