If you need any level of transparency in your image, you must use either a GIF or a PNG. GIF images (and also PNG) support 1-color transparency. This basically means that you can save your image with a transparent background. Lets use the Good Food logo as an example.
If you want to have the smallest file size possible, and maximize your space, then you should probably go with JPG images. They traditionally use a 10:1 compression ratio. While PNG images are higher quality, they are also much larger once the compression image is done.
JPEGs dont support transparent backgrounds. Non-rectangular logos and graphics featuring lots of text are unlikely to work well in this format as a result. JPEG images will also struggle to blend seamlessly with web pages that feature different background colors. PNG files, on the other hand, do support transparency.
The easiest way to remove a background from your logo is to use remove.bg. However, the software only accepts JPG, PNG, and TIFF files. If your image is in a different format, you will need to convert the file. You can do so quickly using CloudConvert.
JPG does not allow transparent backgrounds. The only thing you can do is have a flat color background that would blend into your website: eg. if your website background is white, then have JPGs created with a white background. Otherwise you need to consider saving as PNG, which does allow true transparency.
Another option is a GIF. GIF files can have transparent backgrounds, however, there are some benefits to using a PNG over a GIF. PNGs have better compression, so the image size is smaller. In addition, GIFs only allow one color to be specified as transparent, while PNGs have better transparency options.
