Any permanent (artifact, creature, enchantment, planeswalker, and land) with the legendary supertype is bound by the legend rule, which prevents multiple copies of the card with the same name from existing on the battlefield under the same players control.
There are also two indirect ways to bypass the legend rule: creating a copy of a legendary creature under a different name (Lazav, Dimir Mastermind) and creating a copy of a legendary creature that isnt legendary (Helm of the Host).
A legendary creature entering the battlefield causes an ETB ability to trigger. Because of the legend rule, I have to first choose which legendary creature to keep, and put the other into the graveyard. Next, the legendary creature dying causes an LTB dying trigger to occur.
The legend rule does not say you sacrifice anything. You would still pick one to keep and the rest go to the graveyard.
The Current MTG Legend Rule From 2013 Present The only restriction being, a single player cannot control more than one copy of a single legendary card. They also did an update to allow players to control multiple Planeswalkers of the same subtype (such as Jace), so long as they were not the same name.
The legend rule is a state-based effect. You cannot respond or reply to the legend rule effectits just a thing that happens instantly. There are a few fringe scenarios where you might want to intentionally cast a second legend after attacking with the first copy, just in case you need the blocker.
Spark Double; Osgood, Operation Double; Auton Soldier; and Sakashima of a Thousand Faces can enter the battlefield as a copy of a legendary creature (and even a planeswalker in the case of Spark Double). Cadric, Soul Kindler and The Master, Multiplied make it so that the legend rule doesnt apply to your s.
No the legend rule is whats known as a state-based action. This means that theres no way to respond to it, even with spells that have split second or the like. This might seem like a bummer at first, but it neuters some potentially oppressive interactions and opens up some fun combos.
