Open your image in your photo editing software, like Photoshop. You will need to convert it to grayscale to make your negative. You will also want to resize your negative to fit your cyanotype paper.
A digital negative is equivalent to a film negative, so its not the actual cyanotype print. I create the digital negative by printing a reversed image onto an overhead transparency film. I place it on top of the cyanotype paper and expose this layered sandwich to UV light.
A digital negative is a negative image printed onto a transparency film using an inkjet printer. Once the original image is in your computer it can be edited to taste and prepared for lots of really interesting alternative photographic printing processes.
RAW files are often called digital negatives because, like film negatives, they contain more of the original images information. With a negative, youve got more scope to improve the colors, contrast and exposure of the photo. Negatives contain a lot more image information than a print.
Enough talking and lets jump into it. Step 1: Open your image in Photoshop. Just import your image directly into Photoshop. Step 2: Create a Levels Adjustment Layer. Step 3: Adjust each colours level. Step 4: Increase exposure slightly (optional but recommended)
Go to Image/Adjust/Desaturate and then to turn it into a negative use Image/Adjust/Invert and to lower the contrast Image/Adjust/Levels.
An example of this technique would be using a red filter only on the sky, and a green filter on just the grass, all at once red filter would darken the sky and the green filter would lighten the grass).
