Negative indexing allows you to access elements of a sequence from the end, using negative numbers as indexes. The last element of a sequence has an index of -1, the second last has an index of -2, and so on. For example: a = [1, 2, 3, 4] # a list of four numbers. print(a[-1]) # prints the last element of the list.
Negative indices are powers (also called exponents) with a minus sign in front of them. E.g. x2. 34.
The rule for negative indices is a m = 1 a m . A negative power is often referred to as a reciprocal. The reciprocal of a fraction is that fraction turned upside down, eg the reciprocal of 3/4 is 4/3. ( a m = 1 a m is the reciprocal of ).
The Negative Side Index numbers deal with averages and are a rough estimate of the change in a variable. Consequently, they simply indicate temporal changes for the variable which are not completely true or accurate.
When the index is negative, put it over 1 and flip to make it positive. Put the term over 1. Flip the fraction to make the index positive. Simplify if necessary.
To make the negative index positive we put the term over 1 and flip it. It is known as finding the reciprocal of the term.
To select numbers from the end of the list, we use negative indexes starting from -1 and adding -1 each time to get the next number from the end. In the example above, to select the element 60 that is placed at the end of the list, we can use the index -1. For element 15, we can use the index -2 and so on.
