Negative index counts back from the end of the typed array if index 0 , index + array. length is accessed.
Which programming language first used negative indexing to mean counting from the end? Negative indexing is a well-known feature of Python, for example a[-1] gets the last element of list a .
Negative indexes refer to the positions of elements within an array-like object such as a list, tuple, or string, counting from the end of the data structure rather than the beginning.
In many programming languages (eg: JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, Clojure, etc.) you can use a negative index to select items in arrays or characters in text counting from the end of the array or string. Positive indexes count from the start. Negative indexes count from the end.
It depends on your language, and often on the specific situation. In Python, a negative index means to count backward from the end. So, as long as your negative number doesnt go past the length of the array, its legal. In C, a negative index means to count backward from the start.
Negative indexing allows accessing array elements relative to the end of the array rather than the beginning. For example, in Python, index -1 refers to the last element, -2 refers to second last, and so on.
Negative indexing is used in Python to manipulate sequence objects such as lists, arrays, strings, etc. Negative indexing retrieves elements from the end by providing negative numbers as sequence indexes.
If you really need to use negative indexes it is also possible. C / C++ calculates memory address of array element using address of table and then adding index value to it. Using negative numbers just points to memory area placed before your table (which is not you normally want).
