[intro music] NARRATOR:The late NIMH neuroscientist doctor Louis Sokoloff helped open a window to the inner workings of the living human brain. He developed a method for visualizing what parts of the brain are active under a particular condition. This reveals the functions of different parts of the brain. His method was adapted to make possible positron emission tomography, or PET scanning. In addition to its role in brain research, Pet has also become a vital tool for cancer diagnosis an unforeseen benefit. Prior to PET scanning, scientists didnt have a direct way to what functions different parts of the brain perform. They had to rely on what could be inferred from animal brains or consequences of brain injury or surgery. PET scanning can show what parts of the brain are at work by tracing where its burning fuel. The blood carries this fuel a sugar called glucose -- to where its needed. The most active areas. Claudia Wassmann: Sokoloffs work established many fundamental

Positron emission tomography (PET) scans are used to produce detailed three-dimensional images of the inside of the body. The images can clearly show the part of the body being investigated, including any abnormal areas, and can highlight how well certain functions of the body are working.
Used mostly in patients with brain or heart conditions and cancer, PET helps to visualize the biochemical changes taking place in the body, such as the metabolism (the process by which cells change food into energy after food is digested and absorbed into the blood) of the heart muscle.
Not all cancers show up on a PET scan. PET scan results are often used with other imaging and lab test results. Other tests are often needed to find out whether an area that collected a lot of radioactive material is non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant).
In these studies, the PET result is most commonly designated as negative or positive, wherein negative is defined as having no evidence of malignant disease, with any uptake being limited to that expected for an anatomic site; and positive is defined as having focal or diffuse uptake in an area incompatible
PET (positron emission tomography) scan. The patient lies on a table that slides through the PET machine. The head rest and white strap help the patient lie still.
PET scans can help detect cancer and how far it has spread. PET scans can show solid tumors in the brain, prostate, thyroid, lungs, and cervix. The scans can also evaluate the occurrence of colorectal, lymphoma, melanoma, and pancreatic tumors.
Other metastatic tumors such as mucinous adenocarcinomas of gastrointestinal origin can also show false negative findings in PET scans. Also, a metastatic mass from a renal cell carcinoma (20) (Fig. 17), and some invasive ductal and lobular breast carcinomas (21) are well reported to result in false negative findings.
Scanning the whole body all at once PET (positron emission tomography) is an extremely safe and powerful method for imaging inside the body, used to evaluate organs and other tissues for potential diseases, including cancer.
