Say, Thank you! If you want to have more interaction with this person, then look for ways you can work with him or for him. Otherwise, express your gratitude move on. Also note that he tells you that you should ask a person who has taught you or worked with you for such a letter.
If youre applying for a jobor college or graduate schoolyou may be asked to submit a letter of recommendation letter. A negative recommendation letter can cost you your dream job. Even a recommendation letter thats lukewarm about you can damage your ability to land a job or get accepted to a program.
If you cant say anything good, dont say anything: When writing a reference letter never include any negative criticism or defamatory comments, as this could constitute libel.
If youre asked to write a letter of recommendation then it is open to you to do so, and to write a negative recommendation if you think that is warranted. In practice this is rare, because most of the time, if an academic has a negative view of the student then they will just decline to write the letter.
Of course it happens, but in my experience (grad admissions, faculty hiring, promotion and tenure cases) explicitly negative letters rare. Ben Zhao gives a lot of good examples of what we actually see. Because explicitly negative comments are rare, they do get the attention of the evaluators.
If the person you ask for a letter requests it, theres nothing unethical about ghostwriting your own letter of recommendation (unless a university explicitly forbids it, but Ill get back to that in a moment). No one knows your accomplishments better than you.
Characteristics of Weak Recommendation Letters Too short, vague, unsupported points. Generic letter or letters that were obviously written for other purposes (grad school admission, for example). Letters that merely summarize a candidates resume or transcript.
A successful letter should avoid: General language or overly broad descriptors of the students performance in the classroom; Focusing on a students punctuality or ability to complete the readings. Too much time and attention detailing the relationship with the student or the content of the course.
