A heart attack, technically called a myocardial infarction or MI, happens when there is a blockage that prevents the oxygen-rich blood from getting to the heart, explains William Harris III, M.D., a cardiologist with Riverside Cardiology Specialists. Cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops functioning.
A heart attack is also known as a myocardial infarction. The three types of heart attacks are: ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) coronary spasm, or unstable angina.
Unlike skin or hair, once heart muscle is damaged, it will never grow back. All heart attacks are serious, but one type of is the most dangerous of all and its known as a STEMI (ST segment elevation myocardial infarction), or a widowmaker heart attack.
7- How can you prevent a new acute myocardial infarction (AMI)? Quitting smoking is potentially the most effective of all prevention measures. Diet: increase the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and fish. Reduce your intake of saturated fat and salt.
Adapted from Newby et al. 6 ACS: acute coronary syndrome; AMI: acute myocardial infarction; CAD: coronary artery disease; CHF: congestive heart failure; CM: cardiomyopathy; CT: cardiothoracic; PCI: percutaneous coronary intervention; PE: pulmonary embolism; STEMI: ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction.
Complications of MI include arrhythmic, mechanical, and inflammatory (early pericarditis and post-MI syndrome) sequelae, as well as left ventricular mural thrombus (LVMT) (see the following image).
Cardiac Troponin I or Troponin T - which are both very sensitive and specific and are the recommended laboratory tests for the diagnosis of MI. Serial testing is recommended in order to confirm or exclude a rise or fall in troponin concentration.
Acute myocardial infarction with rupture, gross. Acute myocardial infarction with rupture and tamponade, gross. Intermediate (healing) myocardial infarction (1 - 2 weeks), microscopic. Remote myocardial infarction (3 to 4 weeks), microscopic.
What are the symptoms of heart attack? Chest pain or discomfort. Feeling weak, light-headed, or faint. Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms or shoulders. Shortness of breath.
The myocardial infarction process can be divided into 2 phases, an early evolving phase (the first 6 hours) and a later convalescent phase. An evolving infarction is associated with an occluded coronary artery; in most cases, a thrombotic occlusion occurs.
