IDs should be unique on a page. This means that if you attach a style to an ID, you wont be able to reuse it within the same webpage. Classes, however, can appear on several HTML elements on the same page. Being able to reuse styles is one of the advantages of CSS.
You should not use unnecessary ids in HTML to avoid duplicate ids on a page. Duplicate ids can mess up the information passed through the accessibility APIs and provide bad information to users.
A CSS ID selector uses the ID attribute of an HTML element to select one unique element on a page. To use an ID selector in CSS, you simply write a hashtag (#) followed by the ID of the element. Then put the style properties you want to apply to the element in brackets.
The id selector uses the id attribute of an HTML element to select a specific element. The id of an element is unique within a page, so the id selector is used to select one unique element! To select an element with a specific id, write a hash (#) character, followed by the id of the element.
id attributes must be unique in HTML while class attributes are re-usable. If you can stick to that rule, it is up to you. Personally, I prefer using classes throughout. However some people use classes if they want to select multiple elements and go for id if they want to select a single element in CSS or JS.
Since IDs are the first actions to be resolved, technically, they are faster. With modern processing speeds, however, the difference is so small that it should not be a determining factor in how you write your code.
