When a patient presents with an abnormal Pap smear, the initial question that most people have is what does this exactly mean. In a result in an abnormal Pap smear is strictly a screening test to help us know which patients require a further evaluation to detect if cervical dysplasia truly exists. A Pap smear is an excellent screening test. It is not an excellent diagnostic test and what that means is that within the realm of abnormal, meaning abnormal cells on the cervix which is called and physician terms dysplasia, a Pap smear is very good at telling us who has no dysplasia and who does have some dysplasia. But it is not is not a good test in telling us what degree that dysplasia exists and so information that is commonly presented or reported on Pap smears is whether a viral infection called HPV exists. Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance is the most common abnormal finding in a Pap test. It may be a sign of infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) or other types of infection, such as a yeast infection.
Normal Pap test results: No abnormal cervical cells were found. A normal test result may also be called a negative test result or negative for intraepithelial lesion (area of abnormal growth) or malignancy.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
(NEH-guh-tiv IN-truh-eh-pih-THEE-lee-ul LEE-zhun muh-LIG-nun-see) A Pap test finding that means no cancer cells or other abnormal cells have been found on the surface of or in the tissue that lines the cervix. Cell changes that suggest inflammation or infection may be included in this finding.

Higher risk: Your test results show either HPV infection with types 16 and/or 18, high grade cell changes on your cervix, or persistent infection with one of the other high-risk HPV types (not 16/18). It is important that you have a further follow-up because you may be at a high risk of developing cervical cancer.
Cervical cell classes: (A) normal squamous, (B) normal columnar, and (C) low-grade dysplasia; (D) high-grade dysplasia (HGD) with moderate dysplasia, (E) HGD with severe dysplasia, and (F) carcinoma in situ.
There are 3 main categories, some of which have sub-categories: Negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy. Epithelial cell abnormalities. Other malignant neoplasms.
