Endocervical glandular neoplasia (invasive endocervical adenocarcinoma [EA], adenocarcinoma in situ [AIS]) is difficult to detect on Pap tests and represents a common source of false-negative diagnoses and interobserver discordance in cervical cytology.
Bleeding or spotting after a Pap smear isnt unusual, even for people without infections, cancer, or other conditions. The delicate tissues of your cervix can bleed after a brush or swab scratches the surface.
Certain things may interfere with a Pap test including: Menstruation. Use of things, such as vaginal creams, jellies, medicines, or spermicidal foams, for 2 to 3 days before the Pap test, as these substances may alter the pH of the cells or hide abnormal cells.
If inflammation (redness) is present in the cells on the Pap smear, it means that some white blood cells were seen on your Pap smear. Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem.
A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. This is good news. But you still need to get Pap tests in the future. New cell changes can still form on your cervix. Your doctor may tell you that you can wait three years for your next screening test if you received a Pap test only.
What is causing this delay? There is a shortage of laboratory staff across the country and the number of samples going to laboratories has gone up. This is causing a backlog to build up.
Other adhesion molecules also may be involved in the process. Possible alternative reasons for false-negative Pap smears include poor cell sample collection, mistakes in transferring cells to slides and human error in evaluating the collected cells.
Cervical cell classes: (A) normal squamous, (B) normal columnar, and (C) low-grade dysplasia; (D) high-grade dysplasia (HGD) with moderate dysplasia, (E) HGD with severe dysplasia, and (F) carcinoma in situ.
In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection. Inflammation in the pelvic area. Normal cellular changes that occur with age.
Other causes of abnormal Pap smear results include: Smoking. Yeast or bacterial infections. Vaginal inflammation or irritation. Sexual transmitted diseases, like chlamydia or gonorrhea. Normal changes to the cervix because of the aging process.
