You may test positive, return for a retest a few years later, and test negative. This means that your body has successfully fought off the infection. Or you may test negative, return for a retest five years later, and test positive after exposure to the virus. HPV is incredibly common.
Results and Follow-Up Normal: No sign of disease. This means nothing irregular was found. Unclear: The lab couldnt determine whether the cells are normal or abnormal. Your healthcare provider may have you come back immediately or in six months for another Pap smear. Abnormal: The cells look different than they should.
Unsatisfactory Pap test results: The lab sample may not have had enough cells, or the cells may have been clumped together or hidden by blood or mucus. Your health care provider will ask you to come in for another Pap test in 2 to 4 months.
A Pap test can be normal (or negative), unclear, abnormal, or unsatisfactory. In contrast, an HPV test can be negative or positive. Even if a Pap test is negative, you still need a Pap exam every three years, as its possible for the cells in your cervix to change.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
If you test negative for HPV, you are not likely to have cervical precancer, and you should have repeat HPV testing with or without a Pap test in three years. In most cases, the ASC-US will resolve during this time. Repeat Pap testing in one year This is also an acceptable option.
A normal, also called negative, Pap smear result indicates that no evidence of abnormal cells were found in the sample. An abnormal, or positive, result on a Pap smear indicates that abnormal cells were detected in the sample and additional treatment or testing may be necessary.
Listen to pronunciation. (NEH-guh-tiv reh-ZULT) A Pap test finding that means no cancer cells or other abnormal cells have been found on the surface of or in the tissue that lines the cervix.
