Overdraft fees can occur when a transaction gives you a negative balance or you already have a negative balance. But its possible to avoid these fees at certain banks, whether you simply opt out of automatic overdrafts, use an account that doesnt charge you an overdraft fee, or sign up for overdraft alerts.
Not paying back your arranged overdraft may lead to large interest charges. If you cant pay it back, your provider may withdraw your arranged overdraft and ask for full repayment. This could also affect your credit score.
We will charge you a fee of up to $34.50 each time we pay an overdraft.
An insufficient funds fee (sometimes referred to as a non-sufficient funds fee or NSF fee) can occur when you dont have enough money in your checking (spending) account to cover the entire transaction.
Contact your bank as soon as you realize youve been charged an overdraft fee. You can call the number on the back of your debit card to speak with a representative, who may be able to help. Explain what happened. Give a few details as to why you overdrafted.
Your bank may offer overdraft coverage for debit and ATM transactions, but you dont have to accept it. If you dont opt in to overdraft coverage, ATM and debit card transactions will be declined by your bank if theres not enough money in your account to cover them, and you wont be charged a fee.
If you change your mind at any time after opting-in, you can still opt-out by contacting your bank. If you have a separate savings account, you might think about linking your savings account to your checking account when your bank provides this option.
The bank must notify you in writing or electronically about the banks overdraft service and obtain your affirmative consent to participate. If you had affirmatively consented or agreed to the overdraft service for one-time debit card transactions and wish to revoke that consent, you can do so at any time.
