[Music] in our previous video we studied what mathematical statements are but do we know how they are denoted yes mathematical statements are generally denoted using lowercase letters like P Q R and so on so it can also be written as this pretty simple isnt it now that weve understood mathematical statements completely lets try and understand the negation of a statement okay so what does the word negation tell you yes its the negative of something so for example if I say the earth is round in shape then what will be the negation of this statement yes the negation would be the earth is not round in shape now consider this example what will be the negation of this statement will it be Jordan is short not really remember that negation is just the negative of a statement that is we just deny the statement but we dont say the opposite of that statement so the correct answer would be Jordan is not tall okay lets take one more example for clarity consider this statement what will be the

The negation of a given statement p is called not p, that if true, exactly expresses what it would mean to be false. The truth table of the NOT operator is shown below. As we can see, a true statement when negated is true, and a false statement when negated is true.
Negation is a logical operation that denies or contradicts something. A negation is a denial or contradiction of something. If two statements are mutually contradictory, then they negate each other.
The ! (logical negation) operator determines whether the operand evaluates to 0 (false) or nonzero (true). The expression yields the value 1 (true) if the operand evaluates to 0, and yields the value 0 (false) if the operand evaluates to a nonzero value.
The symbols used to represent the negation of a statement are ~ or . For example, the given sentence is Arjuns dog has a black tail. Then, the negation of the given statement is Arjuns dog does not have a black tail. Thus, if the given statement is true, then the negation of the given statement is false.
Negations can express a contradiction, a contrariety, or a subcontrariety; see Aristotle, De interpretatione, 6.17a258.18a27. A negating term may be used to indicate the complement of a class rather than the opposite of some state of affairs.
The most common way to negate a predicate function is to use the ! operator. The isOdd() function above returns the opposite Boolean value of isEven().
In simpler terms, negation defines the polar opposition of affirmative, denies the existence or vaguely a refutation. This is also known as Not. Classical logic resembles negation with truth function which takes truth to falsity and is perfectly capable of running the opposite operation.
Example. Negate the statement If all rich people are happy, then all poor people are sad. First, this statement has the form If A, then B, where A is the statement All rich people are happy and B is the statement All poor people are sad. So the negation has the form A and not B. So we will need to negate B.
