The dot (.) matches any character. A single character that doesnt have any other special meaning matches that character.
If you want to match a literal period (.), or other special character in your regular expression, escape it with a backslash (\) character. Like many other scripting languages, double-quoted TrafficScript strings use \ as an escape character, so to place a regular expression like ^192\.
(?! \.) is a Negative LookAhead in regex, which basically tells the regex that for each match, it should not be followed by a . It will match any non-empty string that does not contain a dot between the start and the end of the string. If there is a dot somewhere between start to end (i.e. anywhere) it will fail.
The dot is repeated by the plus. The plus is greedy. Therefore, the engine will repeat the dot as many times as it can. The dot matches E, so the regex continues to try to match the dot with the next character.
This just means that in the example we saw earlier, if we want to escape the dot character, we need to put a backslash character before the dot character. Alternatively, we can place the dot character in between \Q and \E.
The dot operator symbol is used in math to represent multiplication and, in the context of linear algebra, as the dot product operator. Typically, the symbol is used in an expression like this: 35. In plain language, this expression means three multiplied by five.
1 Answer. The main problem with dots is that . is the regex character for matches anything. You need to escape it with a backslash.
