What Are Positive and Negative Space? Positive and negative space are terms referring to composition in art, graphic design, and photography. Positive space is the subject or areas of interest in artwork, and negative space is the space around the focal point.
For example, do you see faces or a vase? If you are seeing a vase, then you are seeing the white area as the positive space. The black areas become the negative space. If you are seeing faces, then you are seeing the black areas as the positive space, and the white area as the negative space.
Negative space is the background of a design or work of art, and positive space is the foreground (the front). Negative space gives design definition, and its the most neglected in art and design.
Positive space refers to the subject or areas of interest in an artwork, such as a persons face or figure in a portrait, the objects in a still life painting, or the trees in a landscape painting. Negative space is the background or the area that surrounds the subject of the work.
Basically, negative space or white space, as its often called is the area of the layout that is left empty. It may be not only around the objects you place in the layout but also between and inside them. Negative space is a kind of breathing room for all the objects on the page or screen.
Negative space is the space around and between the subject of an image. Negative spaces are actual shapes that share edges with the positive shape. Just as important as the object itself, negative space helps to define the boundaries of the positive space and brings balance to a composition.
Balance: Negative space balances out positive space so that a visual piece does not overwhelm viewers. Positive space is where the busy action is, while the negative space is a quiet area. The use of negative space can also help draw attention to the main focus of the work.
Positive space is where the actual objects are; in bathrooms it is the bath, toilet, basin, lighting, etc, while the negative space is the empty space around and in between everything else, more often than not highlighting and showcasing everything next to it.
Positive space refers to the subject or areas of interest in an artwork, such as a persons face or figure in a portrait, the objects in a still life painting, or the trees in a landscape painting. Negative space is the background or the area that surrounds the subject of the work.
