Stop! Lets break this down. We all know open offices are bad. Thereve been studies that show that private offices clearly outperformed open ones. Open offices are about saving money. Pricey real estate means that every square foots a dollar sign, and thats fine. But we dont like to talk about it that way. We act like its about interaction and collaboration, even though studies have shown that ease of interaction is not an issue in any type of office. To be clear, I am throwing stones from a glass office. This is where I work. My desk is incredibly close to my poor neighbors, I always have to wear headphones to concentrate, and nobody ever talks. But when you look at really cool companies, across the board they all have open offices to encourage interaction and openness. Dog vacation website? Open office. Charity website? Open office. But this is not just penny pinching. We talk about them like theyre better, and they used to be. Open offices were once works of art.

3 Alternatives to the Open Office Layout Activity Based Working (ABW) Also known as agile or flexible working - in this model workers arent tied to individual desks or offices, but instead let their task at hand dictate where they work. Video conferencing. A hybrid approach.
The different office types Private Office. Coworking Desk. Virtual Office. Enterprise Office.
Closed office plan A traditional floor plan which divides the office into smaller spaces such as cubicles and enclosed private offices, with less room for collaborative space.
Open office floor plans are a great enabler of agility and can be hugely beneficial to companies that demand dexterity. Whether its mobilizing on a major project or coming together to collaborate quickly, open workplaces literally knock down barriers to action.
In an open office layout, the primary workspace design utilizes an open floor plan most commonly with the inclusion of semi-open cubicles or shared desk clusters. In the traditional office layout, the workspaces are primarily sectioned off, consisting of mostly enclosed offices and one or two common rooms.
Closed floor plans are the exact opposite of open. In a closed floor plan, each room is separated from the others by walls.
The main difference between an open vs closed office design is rooted in their layouts. An open office design features a little to no closed partition whereas in a closed office design the layout is divided into cubicles or features multiple closed partitions.
Closed office layouts have the advantage of offering more quiet and are private spaces for employees to engage in focused work with fewer distractions. Having a closed private workspace allows workers to control volume in their workspace, which is not easy to do in an open office.
