A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. This is good news. But you still need to get Pap tests in the future. New cell changes can still form on your cervix. Your doctor may tell you that you can wait three years for your next screening test if you received a Pap test only.
The original negative Pap test was confirmed in 98.6% of these cases, and a cellular abnormality was found in only 1.4% (6 patients). This data supports that most patients with a negative Pap and a positive HPV just have an HPV infection.
Your doctor will probably recommend a follow-up test in a year to see if the infection has cleared or to check for signs of cervical cancer. Negative HPV test. A negative test result means that you dont have any of the types of HPV that cause cervical cancer.
Test results can be inconclusive. This result is sometimes called ASC-US, which means atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. The cells didnt look quite like normal cells, but they couldnt really be classified as abnormal. In some cases, a poor sample can lead to inconclusive results.
Inflammation. Inflammation is a very common finding on a Pap smear. It is probably only docHub when it is obscuring or severe. Inflammation on Pap smear may reflect a genital tract infection or may be nonspecific (Fig. 8).
Certain things may interfere with a Pap test including: Menstruation. Use of things, such as vaginal creams, jellies, medicines, or spermicidal foams, for 2 to 3 days before the Pap test, as these substances may alter the pH of the cells or hide abnormal cells.
A Pap test may also come back as unsatisfactory. Normal Pap test results: No abnormal cervical cells were found. A normal test result may also be called a negative test result or negative for intraepithelial lesion (area of abnormal growth) or malignancy.
Human Papillomavirus-Negative Cervical Cancer: A Comprehensive Review. Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been the leading cause of cervical cancer for over 25 years.
