The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P040D means Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor A Circuit High. The PCM compares the EGR temperature sensor A readings with values programmed into its memory. If the voltage is too high, it will set the generic code P040D.
Common causes of exhaust gas temperature sensor failure is exposure to excessively high temperatures over 900C in some cases, the very thing they protect other components from.
Exhaust gas temperature sensor - Symptoms: Effects Warning lamp for glow plug system flashes. Warning lamp for particulate filter lights up. Engine control lamp is on. Increase in exhaust emissions (CO, NOx and HC) Poor driving behaviour because of shortened regeneration intervals of the particulate filter.
Temperature sensors can fail due to various reasons, including: Environmental factors: Exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, corrosive chemicals, or physical damage can degrade the sensors components over time, leading to failure.
Common fault codes include: P0544: Exhaust gas temperature sensor, bank 1, sensor 1 - circuit malfunction. P0546: Exhaust gas temperature sensor, bank 1, sensor 1 - high input. P2033: Exhaust gas temperature bank 1, sensor 2 - circuit high.
The temperature sensor does occassionally fail in a gauge but this is not often. The most common causes of an Exhaust Temperature gauge not working is wiring or incorrect installation. If your gauge is erractically jumping around or measuring maximum temperature this is most often the cause of a damaged sensor.
To diagnose a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor, consider the following steps: Conduct an electronic test and read any fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Inspect the connectors for signs of corrosion or loose connections. Check the wiring for any breaks or damage that could cause a short to the ground.
