There is no specific normal or abnormal level of PSA in the blood. In the past, PSA levels of 4.0 ng/mL and lower were considered normal. However, some individuals with PSA levels below 4.0 ng/mL have prostate cancer and many with higher PSA levels between 4 and 10 ng/mL do not have prostate cancer (1).
If you receive a certification (negative), it means that PSA has no record of the birth, marriage, or death certificate in its electronic and paper archives after an exhaustive search in the said archives.
If your PSA level is low and not rising after repeated tests, its probably not a cancer recurrence. Thats because other cells in your body can produce small amounts of PSA. Ideally, your post-prostatectomy PSA will be undetectable, or less than 0.05 or 0.1 nanograms of PSA per milliliter of blood (ng/mL).
Request a copy of your document from the Local Civil Registrars Office (LCRO) where the birth, marriage or death was registered. If the requested document is available, request the LCRO to endorse a copy marked with For OCRG File to the PSA Office of the Civil Registrar General (OCRG).
A false-negative result means that the test shows that the PSA level is normal even though prostate cancer is present. Not all prostate cancers cause a high PSA level. PSA testing misses about 15% of prostate cancers. Overdiagnosis means diagnosing prostate cancer that would never pose a serious threat to your health.
Denial of certification means a refusal to grant an initial certification or refusal to grant a renewal certification.
If, for some reason the PSA could not locate a copy of the certificate in its files, a negative intact result is reported, and a Negative Certification is generated for that request.
A Negative Certification is issued when the PSA certificate (birth, marriage, death) being requested could not be found in PSAs electronic and paper archives. In other words, PSA does not have a record of the document being asked for.
