A negative repetition (negative rep) is the repetition of a technique in weight lifting in which the lifter performs the eccentric phase of a lift.
Focus on the negative rep! Perform the lowering phase of a muscle contraction for 3-5 seconds and then quickly execute the concentric phase. Here are some examples using common exercises: With the biceps curl example, pull the weight to the top quickly (1 second) and then lower the weight down slowly (3-5 seconds).
Negative reps are a great tool for helping break through a training plateau all the while building muscle and strength. They also help improve flexibility and may reduce the rate of injury occurrence.
For example, if you are performing bicep curls and the set calls for 12 reps, perform slower negatives for the last 3 reps. Each rep should have a controlled negative, but you can extend the length of the lower phase another 3-5 seconds to emphasize the tension on the muscle.
Negative or eccentric training is a training system which aims to focus on the lowering or eccentric phase of a movement. This forces your body to have control of the weight youre using without cheating as its a lot slower than how you would usually do the exercise.
Negative Reps are usually done as a separate set because of the amount of load being utilized. If utilized, my recommendations are 1-3 sets for 1-3 reps done at the beginning of the training session after a thorough pre activity preparation phase and implementing the proper preparation progression.
