Charles Zona (CZ): Hello, and welcome to another McCrone Group webinar. My name is Charles Zona, and today we are happy to welcome Doug Meier. Doug is going to talk to us about X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, otherwise known as XPS. Before we get started I would like to give you a bit of Dougs background. Doug is a senior research scientist with McCrone Associates. He specializes in surface sensitive spectroscopies, such as Auger electron, X-ray photoelectron, infrared reflection absorption, thermal desorption, and low-energy electron diffraction. Doug was awarded the U.S. Department of Commerces Silver Medal for his work in the development of conductometric chemical microsensor array technology for the detection of chemical warfare agents. He also has over ten years of micro beam analysis experience prior to joining McCrone Associates. Doug will field questions from the audience immediately following todays presentation, and this webinar is being recorded and will be available on

3. A broad structure due to electrons from deeper in the solid which are ineslastically scattered (reduced KE) forms the background. 4. Satellites (shake-off and shake-up) are due to a sudden change in Coulombic potential as the photoejected electron passes through the valence band.
The perturbation is called shake-up if they refer to an excitation in the final system, or shake-off if the result is the loss of one or more outer shell electrons from the ion.
Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented.
C-C peak at 284.8eV is frequently used a charge correction reference because of its convenience. Not always reliable, possibly changing with nature of the surface hydrocarbon, film thickness and nature of the sample.

The intensity depends on the X-ray emission, charge neutralization, resolution, sample itself and many other parameters. So it may happen that withn the same sample and using same setting you would get a different peak intensity if you measure them on different date/time.

Deconvolution has also been examined as a means to remove backgrounds from XPS spectra over wide energy ranges, up to 100 eV.
