The most common reason for a negative Pap test with a positive HPV result is that the patient has an HPV infection, but the infection is not causing any cellular abnormalities. Cellular abnormalities caused by HPV can be quite focal on the cervix, while the HPV infection can be more widespread.
An abnormal Pap smear can be caused by cancerous cells. It can also be caused by other cervical and vaginal abnormalities, including dysplasia (precancerous cells) and inflammation.
If you have cervical inflammation due to cervical cancer or precancer, you doctor may perform cryosurgery, freezing abnormal cells in the cervix, which destroys them. Silver nitrate can also destroy abnormal cells. Your doctor can treat your cervicitis after they know its cause.
Today, false negatives are reported in approximately 10 to 20 percent of all negative results. In addition to false negatives, false positives can also be reported.
Inflammation is a common finding on otherwise negative Pap smears. Its clinical significance is uncertain, and confusion often arises about how to manage these cases. . . . Inflammation is a common finding on otherwise negative Pap smears.
Inflammation often causes a mildly abnormal Pap test. An inflamed cervix may look red, irritated, or eroded. Some of the common causes of cervical inflammation are: Bacteria (from an infection), yeast or monilia infections, or trichomonas infections.
Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for two days before having a Pap smear, as these may wash away or obscure abnormal cells. Try not to schedule a Pap smear during your menstrual period. Its best to avoid this time of your cycle, if possible.
Inflammation. Inflammation is a very common finding on a Pap smear. It is probably only docHub when it is obscuring or severe. Inflammation on Pap smear may reflect a genital tract infection or may be nonspecific (Fig. 8).
