Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that opens into the birth canal. It is one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, but also one of the most preventable, thanks to early detection with Pap tests. The cervix has 2 major cell types: flat squamous cells lining the outer part, and column-shaped glandular cells covering the inside of the cervical canal. Both types can become cancerous but squamous cell carcinomas are much more common. Cancer usually starts in the zone where the two cell types meet, known as the transformation zone. Virtually all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomaviruses, or HPVs. There are over a hundred different types of HPV, some of which pose higher risks than others. About 70% of all cases are caused by just two types: HPV-16 and HPV-18. Two proteins produced by HPV, known as E6 and E7, interfere with cell functions that normally prevent excessive cell division. Abnormal Pap test results could mean there are changes in the cells on your cervix, including: Inflammation (irritation). This can be caused by an infection of the cervix. These include yeast infections, HPV, the herpes virus, or many other infections.
Inflammation on a Pap smear can be found in a patient of any age and may be attributable to a benign infection such as Candida vaginitis that need be treated only if the patient is symptomatic. Sexually transmitted infections can also cause an inflammatory reaction on the cervix and should be treated ingly.
Factors that can cause a false-negative result include: An inadequate collection of cells. A small number of abnormal cells. Blood or inflammatory cells obscuring the abnormal cells.
Not use vaginal creams, foams, gels, douches or tampons 48 hours (two days) before your Pap smear. These products could cause an abnormal result. Not have sex 48 hours (two days) before your Pap smear. Sex can irritate the skin of the cervix or cause discharge (fluids) that can lead to an abnormal result.
Infection with HPV that has progressed may cause cervical inflammation, which is usually a later sign of cervical cancer or precancer. It can also be the result of an infection due to other factors that could include: an allergy to spermicide or condom latex.
Antibiotics successfully treat cervicitis in most cases. For other cases, laser therapy or surgery may be required.During your appointment, your healthcare provider will check for: Any redness on your cervix. Discharge. Blood on your vagina or cervix. Inflammation of the vaginal walls.
If inflammation (redness) is present in the cells on the Pap smear, it means that some white blood cells were seen on your Pap smear. Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem.
Today, false negatives are reported in approximately 10 to 20 percent of all negative results. In addition to false negatives, false positives can also be reported.
