If you run an EC2 instance at the beginning of the month but you stop or terminate it later, then your bill includes charges for the time that the instance ran.
You can delete your instance when you no longer need it. This is referred to as terminating your instance. As soon as the state of an instance changes to shutting-down or terminated , you stop incurring charges for that instance. You cant connect to or start an instance after youve terminated it.
To deprecate an AMI on a specific date Select the AMI, and then choose Actions, Manage AMI Deprecation. You can select multiple AMIs to set the same deprecation date of several AMIs at once. Select the Enable check box, and then enter the deprecation date and time.
The key difference between stopping and terminating an instance is that the attached bootable EBS volume will not be deleted. The data on your EBS volume will remain after stopping while all information on the local (ephemeral) hard drive will be lost as usual.
You cant delete a snapshot of the root device of an EBS volume used by a registered AMI. You must first deregister the AMI before you can delete the snapshot. For more information, see Deregister your AMI. You cant delete a snapshot that is managed by the AWS Backup service using Amazon EC2.
Rehydration is the process of spinning up new servers with the latest patches already installed on them and decommissioning/destroying old servers that do not.
Open the Amazon EC2 console at . In the navigation pane, choose Instances. Select the instance. Choose Actions, Instance settings, Change shutdown behavior. The current behavior is selected. To change the behavior, select Stop or Terminate from Shutdown behavior and then choose Apply.
An AMI owner can determine their instance availability through the following three launch permissions: Public, that grants instance launch permission to all AWS account holders. Explicit, that grants launch permission only to specific AWS accounts. Implicit, where only the AMI owner has permission to launch an instance.
Just to state the obvious for junior folks who might come across this: sudo shutdown now requires access to the operating system (via SSH keys, inbound security groups, etc), while aws ec2 stop-instances is an AWS CLI command which simply requires API authentication (via IAM credentials or STS s).
