You may test positive, return for a retest a few years later, and test negative. This means that your body has successfully fought off the infection. Or you may test negative, return for a retest five years later, and test positive after exposure to the virus. HPV is incredibly common.
A Pap test result can be normal, unclear, abnormal, or unsatisfactory. A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. It is common for test results to come back unclear. An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix.
If you test negative for HPV, you are not likely to have cervical precancer, and you should have repeat HPV testing with or without a Pap test in three years. In most cases, the ASC-US will resolve during this time. Repeat Pap testing in one year This is also an acceptable option.
A Pap test can be normal (or negative), unclear, abnormal, or unsatisfactory. In contrast, an HPV test can be negative or positive. Even if a Pap test is negative, you still need a Pap exam every three years, as its possible for the cells in your cervix to change.
Women with negative cytology and positive HPV co-testing results who are aged 30 years and older should be managed in one of two ways: Repeat co-testing in 12 months. If the repeat cervical cytology test result is LSIL or higher or the HPV test result is still positive; the patient should be referred for colposcopy.
Listen to pronunciation. (NEH-guh-tiv reh-ZULT) A Pap test finding that means no cancer cells or other abnormal cells have been found on the surface of or in the tissue that lines the cervix.
A normal, also called negative, Pap smear result indicates that no evidence of abnormal cells were found in the sample. An abnormal, or positive, result on a Pap smear indicates that abnormal cells were detected in the sample and additional treatment or testing may be necessary.
