In Ontario, there are 9 public holidays each year. Some people call these stat holidays. If a public holiday falls on a day that you do not usually work or when you are on vacation, you get another day off with holiday pay.
Policy Interpretation. An employer, with the agreement of an employee, or the majority of the employees, as the case may be, may substitute another day off for a statutory holiday. An agreement between an employer and one employee is permissible.
The Labour Standards Act leaves it up to the employer to decide, which day will be observed as a holiday so check with your human resources department to be sure. Canada Day is usually observed on July 1st but if thats a Sunday then Monday will be given as a day off.

In Ontario, the Employment Standards Act currently recognizes nine (public) statutory holidays. Employers must allow employees to take these days off, and give them stat holiday pay. The statutory holidays in Ontario for 2023 are: New Years Day: Sunday, January 1, 2023.

Employers should be setting policies on when vacation should be used. It was confirmed that employers are fine to say that vacation must be used by the end of the year. But, there cant be a use it or lose it policy because employees technically have until 12 months after earning vacation to use it.
