In the second step of translation, known as elongation, the peptide chain begins to grow. After the initiator transfer RNA (tRNA) binds to the P-site of the ribosome, a second tRNA, carrying another amino acid, enters the A-site. For instance, if the second codon is GCU, the corresponding tRNA's anticodon will be CGA and it carries alanine. An enzyme in the ribosome's large subunit facilitates the transfer of methionine from the initiator tRNA to alanine, forming a dipeptide via a peptide bond. Subsequently, the ribosome advances to the next codon on the messenger RNA, shifting the initial tRNA to the E-site and the second tRNA to the P-site. The initiator tRNA exits, seeking another methionine in the cytosol.
