Upgrading your Teaching Certificate 4 years of state-approved teaching experience. Develop and implement a professional development plan of at least 30 contact hours, approved by the employing school district. Participate in a mentoring program for a minimum of two (2) school years.
Your temporary educator certificate is only valid for three years and cannot be renewed. During this time, you must complete the requirements for a Professional Educator Certificate.
Educators must earn a minimum of 120 renewal credits within a set time frame to meet renewal requirements. Valid certificates must meet requirements within their current certificates validity.
To qualify for Professional certificate renewal, educators must complete the equivalent of 120 renewal credits. As part of these credits, educators may also need to meet Read to Succeed (R2S) endorsement requirements and Jason Flatt Act suicide awareness training requirements.
The educator must submit a written request to the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) Office of Educator Services to reinstate the certificate. The educator must submit an updated Application for Certification and pay the Reinstatement Fee, currently $105.
Type 10 - This person has graduated from an ISBE-approved program, or a comparable out-of-state program. The program included school practicum and coursework in education as well as the speech-language pathology coursework.
Teaching Certification Renewal Your Professional Certificate is valid for five years and expires on June 30 of its expiration year. For recertification (renewal), you must complete 120 renewal credits related to your professional growth plan. This applies whether or not you are employed in a South Carolina school.
If your South Carolina teaching certificate has been expired for less than five years, you may submit a written request to the Office of Educator Services to have it renewed for one year. This yearlong period will give you time to fulfill all requirements for a Professional Certificate.
