A United States postal code, for example, might be either five digits or five digits followed a hyphen (dash) and another four digits (12345-1234). If you are validating US postal codes, allow for both conditions.
The correct format for a numeric ZIP+4 code is five digits, a hyphen, and four digits. The first five digits represent the 5-digit ZIP Code; the sixth and seventh digits (the first two after the hyphen) identify an area known as a sector; the eighth and ninth digits identify a smaller area known as a segment.
The five-digit code which initially specified an area or a part of a town was no longer accurate or efficient enough. So, USPS created 9-digit ZIP Codes to ensure fast and accurate mailings. They indicate the actual path the mail should travel and usually they narrow down to somewhere between ten to twenty homes.
A ZIP+4 Code is a 4-digit code appended to a standard 5-digit ZIP that helps the USPS sort, route, and deliver mail more efficiently. The last 4 digits of these 9-digit ZIP Codes usually represent 6-20 delivery points on a USPS carrier route.
To ensure your zip code or postal code pass through a mail merge without losing any zeros, format the column containing those codes as text. Open your spreadsheet and select the column that contains the zip codes or postal codes. On the Home tab, in the Format box, choose Text.
As an area becomes more densely populated, ZIP codes take on new forms. The USPS reports that one out of every 20 ZIP codes changes annually. Because the boundaries are constantly being redefined, the U.S. Census Bureau stopped using ZIP codes in 2000 for their data collection purposes.
A zip code is always 5 digits. Zip+4 adds four digits to the five digits, and is not needed for a complete address. Zip codes are the postal code used by the US Postal Service. Other countries have different postal codes.
Contact your local Post Office and request their assistance in resolving the problem. All information in our national ZIP Code database is maintained by the Address Management System (AMS) Office and request the street name to be corrected.
