IoT: IoT devices can vary widely in terms of data requirements and can support a wide range of data rates, from very low data rates (e.g., sensor data) to high data rates (e.g., video streaming). NB-IoT: NB-IoT is designed for applications with very low data requirements.
The layers of IoT architecture encompass a range of components, such as the sensing/perception layer, network/connectivity layer, data processing layer and user interface or application layer. These constitute an all-encompassing framework for joining up devices with their users.
The NB-IoT architecture consists of end devices (sensors), base stations or access points, the core network and application servers/platforms. Optional components like gateways may be utilized to connect nodes inside buildings or underground when direct access is not possible.
The NB-IoT system follows the same framing principle of LTE, where the downlink and uplink transmissions are organized into radio frames with a duration of 10 ms each. The same radio frame structure as that of LTE is retained, but with some differences in terms of channels and signals mapping.
NarrowBand-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a standards-based low power wide area (LPWA) technology developed to enable a wide range of new IoT devices and services.
NB-IoT focuses specifically on indoor coverage, low cost, long battery life, and high connection density. NB-IoT uses a subset of the LTE standard, but limits the bandwidth to a single narrow-band of 200kHz.
The channel raster for NB-IoT in-band, guard-band and standalone operation is 100 kHz.
Uplink NB-IoT uses single-carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA) transmission scheme and has 7 symbols in each slot. The subcarrier spacing can be either 15 kHz or 3.75 kHz.
