XPS is short for XML Paper Specification. It was invented by Microsoft as a replacement for PDF files. XPS files can be used to archive and share files you routinely use for your business, such as contracts, receipts, memos, invoices or Web pages.
You can convert an XPS document to DOCX ( see here and here ) but the DOCX will contain only the same information that was contained in the XPS - which means that there are no margins, no paragraphs, no headers, no footers, and possibly no text.
Microsoft XPS Document Writer: Microsoft installs a virtual printer named “Microsoft XPS Document Writer.” This printer creates XPS files from documents you print to it. It's like a “print to PDF” feature, but less useful because it's not as compatible with other software.
How to convert XPS to Word. Open free XPS website and choose Convert application. Click inside the file drop area to upload XPS files or drag & drop XPS files. You can upload maximum 10 files for the operation.
Import XPS Documents Into Word Launch Word. Go to File and Open to open a current document or select New to create a new document. Click Insert and locate the Text section. Click Object, which opens a new window. In the Object window, select the option to Create From File.
Click the checkbox next to the XPS Services feature option to remove the checkmark. Click the “OK” button and wait a few seconds for Windows to disable the XPS Document Writer virtual printer and remove other XPS related services. Close the Uninstall or Change a Program window.
If you are an application developer, you would suggest the Microsoft XPS Document Writer to users who want to create XPS files when your app does not provide the option to save its content in XPS format.
The key difference between PDF and XPS is that PDF can be opened with the use of a browser or a reader while XPS needs to be opened using a browser. While XPS is able to support annotations, PDF is ideal for editing, viewing and compressing documents.
XPS Viewer is a tool used to view XPS files, similar to Adobe Reader. While XPS might not be as popular as PDF, some Windows users still work with it.
The Microsoft XPS Document Writer (MXDW) is a print-to-file driver that enables a Windows application to create XML Paper Specification (XPS) document files on versions of Windows starting with Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2).
