With a regulated firearm, an alteration may be permissible. A common modification is with a shotgun where a barrel is extended or shortened. A sawed-off shotgun must be of a length that is reasonable. Maryland law gives an exact length including a minimum and the firearm must be within the minimum of that size.
Maryland State Restrictions Rifles with a capacity over 10 rounds. Semi-automatic centerfire rifles that can accept a detachable magazine and have any TWO of the following features: Folding stock (Not including telescoping [collapsible] stock) Grenade launcher or flare launcher. Flash suppressor.
Maryland restricts the creation, selling, purchasing, or possession of firearm magazines with a capacity of over 10 rounds. This puts a stop to any high-capacity magazine, even for pistols. There are exceptions for tubular magazines in 22-caliber rifles, and this law does not pertain to law enforcement officers.
The Constitution of Maryland contains no provision protecting the right for individuals to keep and bear arms. The state preempts some local firearm regulations, though local governments may regulate firearms with respect to minors and areas of public assembly.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
(d) Assault weapon means: (1) an assault long gun; (2) an assault pistol; or (3) a copycat weapon.
