If your existing deck stain is: Light: Apply a similar or darker stain color without additional preparation required. Dark: This will be hard to cover with a lighter semi-transparent color, as the old/dark color will come through. If you want to lighten up the color of a dark deck, consider a lighter solid stain.
You can give your wood cabinets a quick makeover with a fresh coat of stain. Using a different color staineven as simple as going one shade darker or lightercan give your kitchen, bathroom or other rooms in your home the new, updated look you want.
The skys the limit for customizing color Start by applying oil-based stain using a Purdy brush, wiping off the excess with a lint-free rag. Then, choose a secondary tone to achieve your custom look. Apply it with a brush, then use a rag to blend the colors together while wiping off the excess.
The new stain you are applying over the old stain should be compatible. For instance, if its an oil-based stain, apply another oil-based stain. If its a water-based stain, apply another water-based stain. Incompatible stains can lead to poor adhesion or blotchy and uneven finish.
Staining over an old, failing finish can lead to premature peeling or flaking of the new stain. Stripping eliminates this risk by ensuring a strong bond between the wood and the fresh stain.
To fix a sticky wood stain, lightly sand the affected area to remove the tackiness, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Allow it to dry completely before applying a new coat if necessary.
From this experiment, I can honestly say adding darker wood stain to an already stained piece did work for me. Maybe one day I will try this on a bigger piece of furniture and I will be happy to break down the entire process to share with you.
