Shrink a data or log file using SSMS In Object Explorer, connect to an instance of the SQL Server Database Engine and then expand that instance. Expand Databases and then right-click the database that you want to shrink. Point to Tasks, point to Shrink, and then select Files. Select the file type and file name.
For dealing with very large log files, its often better to use specialized tools designed for handling such files, like text editors optimized for large files or log analysis tools. Alternatively, you can consider using PowerShell or other programming languages to read and process large log files programmatically.
You can gain space by enlarging the existing log file (if disk space permits) or by adding a log file to the database, typically on a different disk. One transaction log file is sufficient unless log space is running out, and disk space is also running out on the volume that holds the log file.
Shrinking the log file may cause performance issues. Before shrinking the transaction log, please check Factors that can delay log truncation. If the storage space is required again after a log shrink, the transaction log will grow again and by doing that, introduce performance overhead during log growth operations.
Note: You need the sysadmin fixed server role or the dbowner fixed database role to shrink the log. Right-click the database and select Tasks - Shrink - Files. Change the type to Log . Under Shrink action, select Release unused space and click OK.
Large database transactions, such as importing large amounts of data, can lead to a large transaction log file. Transaction log backups not happening fast enough causes the SQL log file to become huge. SQL log files also enlarge due to incomplete replication or availability group synchronization.
There are a number of reasons a log file can fill to extreme sizes. The most common one by far is that the database is in full recovery model, and Transaction Log backups are not happening fast enough.
