in this video we will resize disk on an amazon ec2 server search for easy to click on the ec2 now we have one instance running click on instances click on the instance id click on the storage to view the attached volumes we have one block device size is 50 gb to resize the disk click on the volume id before you resize it is better take a snapshot for that click on create snapshot then give it a description before resize and click on create snapshot close now go to the snapshots you will see the snapshot is taking it will take approx it will take some time to finish once this snapshot is finished you can resize the volume snapshot is finished now you can give it a name for easy identification before resize go back to the instances go to storage click on the inst volume id you can see the volume size is 50 gb now right click on the volume select modify volume from the menu you can enter the new size here for the server i need 100 gb now click on modify this will give you instruction for

Resize an existing EC2 instance in your account. The state of the instance can be either running or stopped. If running, the instance is stopped during the resize operation and returned to the initial state after the resizing is complete.
You cant decrease the size of an EBS volume. However, you can create a smaller volume and then migrate your data to it using an application-level tool such as rsync (Linux instances) or robocopy (Windows instances).
With Amazon EBS Elastic Volumes, you can increase the volume size, change the volume type, or adjust the performance of your EBS volumes. If your instance supports Elastic Volumes, you can do so without detaching the volume or restarting the instance.
You can only increase the size of your Amazon EBS volume. You cant decrease an EBS volumes size. To use a smaller volume, create a smaller volume. Then, use an application-level tool to migrate your data to the smaller volume.
Open the Amazon EC2 console at . In the navigation pane, choose Volumes. Select the volume to modify and choose Actions, Modify volume. The Modify volume screen displays the volume ID and the volumes current configuration, including type, size, IOPS, and throughput.
Detaching the old volume In order to detach the old 10GB volume from your instance, you need to first stop the instance. Afterwards, go to the Volumes section of your AWS EC2 console and detach the external 10GB EBS volume that was mounted on drive D.
Reducing AWS EBS Volumes Create a snapshot of the root volume: Create a second Amazon EBS volume: Create an empty 8GB Amazon EBS volume in the same availability zone. attach both volumes to the instance and again note all device name details. Restart the Instance and SSH in. Stop the instance.
Your answer Snapshot the volume. Create a new smaller EBS volume. Attach the new volume. Format the new volume. Mount the new volume. Copy data from the old volume to the new volume. Prepare the new volume. Detach and unmount the old volume.
