In 2016, Crystal Mason attempted to vote in Tarrant County, Texas, but her name was not on the voter roll. She filled out a provisional ballot, which would be counted if there were no issues. Subsequently, she was arrested and charged with illegal voting, as she was on supervised release due to a prior federal conviction. Mason believed that she was eligible to vote after serving her prison sentence, unaware that Texas law required completion of probation or supervised release first. Despite her provisional ballot not being counted and the situation being a technical misunderstanding, she was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison for illegal voting.
