How to paraphrase Read the original source carefully. Identify the main point(s) and key words. Cover the original text and rewrite it in your own words. Write the paraphrase in your own style. Review your paraphrase to check it accurately reflects the original text but is in your words and style.
Adding or deleting a letter or an entire phrases of source material can help you build seamless transitions between your own ideas and those of experts youre quoting. If youre using MLA style, youll need to indicate modifications to the source text by placing square brackets around any changes made.
Using Brackets Sometimes information is missing or inaccurate in a quote. Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information.
Adding Information to a Quotation Show any added information by placing that added information in square brackets within the quote. You CANNOT substitute parentheses for brackets, since they carry a different meaning.
Very occasionally you may want alter a word or words within a quotation, for the sake of clarity and flow. To indicate that you have made such changes, bracket the altered words. For example, this might happen when you need to change a pronoun in order to make the meaning clear.

Added Material: The quarterback told the reporter, Its quite simple. They [the other team] played a better game, scored more points, and thats why we lost.
Place brackets around any words you add to clarify. The brackets might replace unclear words (e.g. it, them, this, they) or add context to the quote. Brackets tell the reader that you have added your own words, but have not changed the meaning of the original quote.
