Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent.
1 Answer. The MLA handbook explicitly says that altering the original punctuation, capitalization, grammar, etc of a quotation requires you to show with brackets or parentheses that you have altered the quote.
A back quote is a symbol (`) used for various purposes within computer programming, most prominently to denote code blocks. Its also known as an accent grave or open single quote.
Select Proofing. Select AutoCorrect Options to open the AutoCorrect dialog box. Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab. In the Replace As You Type section, select or clear the Straight quotes with smart quotes check box to turn smart quotes on or off.
In a Word document, select the quoted text, then click Layout on the ribbon. Set the left indent to 0.5cm, and click the Enter key. Use the arrows in the indent size box to increase or decrease the indentation. You will then see that the block quote has been created.
