General Guidelines for Indirect Quote As a general rule, you should try to avoid using indirect quotes. If you use an indirect quote, include the source it originated from in your parenthetical citation, followed by the words as cited in and then the source you obtained it from.
APA Style (7th ed.) Use square brackets to indicate changes to a quotation, such as adding words, explanations, or emphasis. To emphasize a word or words in a quotation, use italics. Immediately after the italicized words, insert emphasis added within square brackets as follows: [emphasis added] (APA, 2020, p.
Changes to a quotation not requiring explanation Single quotation marks may be changed to double quotation marks and vice versa. Footnote or endnote number callouts can be omitted. Any other changes (e.g., italicizing words for emphasis or omitting words) must be explicitly indicated.
You can modify a quotes terms by selecting Modify Terms from a quote record, which takes you to the Modify Quote Terms page. Choose a template to see all the terms associated with that template. Select the text box for a term to edit it.
If incorrect spelling, grammar, or punctuation in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and bracketed, immediately after the error in the quotation (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. 274). For example, they made theyre [sic] lunches.
Use brackets to show any changes made to quotations in order to retain grammatical correctness. Use brackets in quotes to add a word, prefix, or suffix in order to fit the quote into your sentence. Use brackets to change the tense of a verb in a quote so that it will fit into your sentence.
