If any incorrect spelling, punctuation, or grammar in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and in brackets, immediately after the error in the quotation.
Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent.
Select Edit Lines on a quote record to open the quote line editor. The quote line editor lets you view all your quote lines and apply changes across the entire quote or to individual lines.
The Chicago Manual of Style says to use sic (italicised and in square brackets) to draw attention to an error in a quotation. However, unless it is important to preserve the error, it is better to simply correct minor errors in quoted text.
If incorrect spelling, grammar, or punctuation in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and bracketed, immediately after the error in the quotation (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. 274). For example, they made theyre [sic] lunches.
Using Brackets Sometimes information is missing or inaccurate in a quote. Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information.
Place brackets around any words you add to clarify. The brackets might replace unclear words (e.g. it, them, this, they) or add context to the quote. Brackets tell the reader that you have added your own words, but have not changed the meaning of the original quote.
Whenever you quote a text, you may need to change the capitalization used in the quote. If your sentence before the quote uses a word like says, states, writes, etc., you will want to capitalize the first word you quote. If you do change a lower case word to upper case, put the capitalized letter in brackets.
