Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent. However, brackets should not be used to change the meaning of the quote.
If you need to edit quotes in your writing, keep the following in mind: Use an ellipsis to indicate omissions in the text. Mark additions or changes by placing the edited text in square brackets. Use the term [Sic] to show that youve duplicated an error from a source.
Change the style of existing quotation marks Choose Edit Substitutions Show Substitutions (from the Edit menu at the top of your screen). In the Substitutions window, select the Smart Dashes checkbox. Click the pop-up menus for double and single quotation marks, and choose a style for each.
In cases where you need to modify a direct quotation so that it fits into your sentence, temper editorial license with the obligation to stay true to the meaning of the original quote, and, depending on your style guide, use brackets to alert readers to changes made to your source material.
You can modify a quotes terms by selecting Modify Terms from a quote record, which takes you to the Modify Quote Terms page. Choose a template to see all the terms associated with that template. Select the text box for a term to edit it.
Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original. Harriet Jacobs writes, She sat down, quivering in every limb (61).
If incorrect spelling, grammar, or punctuation in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and bracketed, immediately after the error in the quotation (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. 274). For example, they made theyre [sic] lunches.
Use smart quotes and dashes Go to Text Input on the right, then click Edit. Turn on Use smart quotes and dashes. If youre working in an app, you can also choose Edit Substitutions Show Substitutions, then select the Smart Quotes and Smart Dashes checkboxes.
