The answer to that question really boils down to your end goal. If you are taking your camera out with the intent to capture high-quality imagery for printing purposes, RAW should always be your go-to.
RAW editors allow you to adjust almost anything you can imagine: exposure, sharpness, color, noise, and more. So unlike with a compressed format (JPEG, for example), if you happen to take an underexposed photo in RAW, you may very well be able to save it by pulling out more detail from the shadows.
In general, its best to aim for about 300 dots per inch (DPI) for quality prints.
Many professional photographers shoot in RAW because the format captures the highest level of detail. It can often be easier to edit exposure later with a RAW file. However, shooting in JPEG has its benefits, since their smaller file sizes allow you to shoot more images at once and transfer files faster.
With JPEG files, the white balance is already balanced. This is a big reason why JPEGs look more finished than their RAW counterparts straight off the camera. A change you can make in a one-step increment in Lightroom, like white balance, you can only make in a five-step increment with JPEGs, Morrison points out.
High-resolution, low-compression JPG files can provide excellent results for artwork printing. This flexible, easy-to-edit format results in top-quality art reproductions when used correctly. Predictably, its a highly popular image format in fine art and portrait and nature photography.
Here are the simple steps you should follow: #1. Calibrate Your Monitor. #2. Crop Your Photo. #3. Change Brightness and Contrast. #4. Enhance Colours. #5. Focus on Sharpness and Clarity. #6. Play Around with Filters (Optional) #7. Save and Print with Confidence. Pro Tips for Print-Ready Photos.
The best image formats for printing include JPEG (or JPG), PDF, and TIFF. Based on your image resolution and file size, youll want to select a format that preserves the appearance and quality of your picture when printing.
