In the UK they grade on what amounts to a seven-point scale. 70% or above is the top band of marks. It is still relatively rare for a student to receive higher than an 80%, though it does happen. Anything in the 60% rangewhat is known as a 2:1is considered a good grade.
The meaning of each grade is as follows: A, A, excellent; B+, B, and B, good; C+ and C, competent; C, continuation competency (the student has achieved the level of proficiency needed for the course to satisfy prerequisite requirements); D+, D, and D, passing, but performance is not adequate to take any subsequent
In courses listed in the UC Davis General Catalog as being letter graded, passing quality means of D- quality or better. This standard holds in such courses whether or not the student has elected to take the course on a Passed/Not Passed (P/NP) or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) basis.
Degree classifications First-Class Honours (First or 1st) (70% and above) Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1, 2.i) (60-70%) Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2, 2.ii) (50-60%) Third-Class Honours (Third or 3rd) (40-50%)
The grading system varies slightly between universities, but generally, a score of 70 or above is considered a First-class Honours degree, 60-69 is an Upper Second-class Honours degree, 50-59 is a Lower Second-class Honours degree, 40-49 is a Third-class Honours degree, and below 40 is a Fail.
Getting over 60% is excellent because it means you have demonstrated a deep knowledge of your subject to the marker. You may be used to getting marks of 90100%, but this is very unlikely to happen at university. Remember that marks in the 5070% range are perfectly normal.
Honours System H180% and above (First Class Honours) H2A 7579% (Second Class Honours (A Division) H2B 7074% (Second Class Honours (B Division) H3 6569% (Third Class Honours) P 5064% (Pass)1 more row
As such you should think as anything above 70% as an A, ie this is the best someone can achieve for that level (for example first year), B as very good, C as good, D as a pass, and E and below is a fail.
