Definition and Usage The pattern attribute specifies a regular expression that the elements value is checked against on form submission. Note: The pattern attribute works with the following input types: text, date, search, url, tel, email, and password.
When Working With HTML or XML. Regular expressions are a powerful tool for working with formal languages. They arent useful, though, when working with languages that arent formal, such as markup languages. A common mistake when working with RegExes is to attempt to use them to parse HTML and XML.
Data Validation with Regular Expressions. The pattern attribute of the element allows you to add basic data validation without resorting to JavaScript. It works by matching the input value against a regular expression. A regular expression is a formalized string of characters that define a pattern.
To use regex in HTML forms, you need to add the pattern attribute to the input elements that you want to validate. The pattern attribute accepts a regex as its value, and it will check if the user input matches the regex before submitting the form.
To get a string contains only letters (both uppercase or lowercase) we use a regular expression (/^[A-Za-z]+$/) which allows only letters. Next the match() method of string object is used to match the said regular expression against the input value.
Specifying a pattern You can use the pattern attribute to specify a regular expression that the inputted value must match in order to be considered valid (see Validating against a regular expression for a simple crash course on using regular expressions to validate inputs).
The createPattern() method repeats the specified element in the specified direction. The element can be an image, video, or another element. The repeated element can be used to draw/fill rectangles, circles, lines etc.
While using regex for parsing HTML has some limitations, it allows you to build a quick solution and serves well for use cases like parsing simple HTML pages, filtering out a certain tag/groups of tags from an HTML page, or for extracting a particular text pattern within a tag.
